Which situation is yours?

Payment reserve (rolling reserve on card payments)

No fixed term published

Square states no fixed number of days: the duration is in your reserve terms (Reserve Dashboard). Reserves are reviewed after a minimum of six months, proactively and without a request.

Protective hold while Square reviews the account (security / fraud review)

2 business days · submission of the requested information

A Square Community moderator (Square staff, not a help-centre page) says the turnaround is 2 business days after you have submitted the requested information.

Account deactivated with funds held (appeal)

2 days · submission of the appeal

Square says appeals are typically reviewed within 48 hours. If approved, held funds are released; if denied, the email explains the impact on held funds.

Not confirmed

We could not confirm these on the platform's own pages, so we do not state them as fact.

  • Length of a reserve: set per account (Reserve Dashboard); Square publishes no standard number of days.
  • Length of an investigation or protective hold beyond the '2 business days' stated by a Square Community moderator after you submit information: no help-centre page states it.
  • Support chat, phone hours and reply times: pages need sign-in or do not state them; phone number comes from the page footer and was not called.
  • Separate appeal route for a reserve (not a deactivation): none found.
  • Eligibility criteria for deactivation appeals beyond the deactivation email: not stated.
  • Regulators or ombudsmen for Square (US): no official Square page read names one, so none listed.
  • Square outside the US (UK, CA, AU, etc.): only US pages were read.
Good to know before a hold happens
  • Reserves apply to card payments, not ACH bank transfers; Square suggests letting customers pay by ACH to avoid reserves.
  • Square names factors for reserves: prepayment for goods/services, chargeback rate, sporadic processing, being new to Square. Keep processing steady and chargebacks low.
  • Keep email and Dashboard notifications on; Square notifies before a reserve starts.
