How Long Do Payment Platforms Hold Funds?
Short answer: it depends on the platform and on the kind of hold. Most everyday holds are short: Fiverr clears earnings 14 days after an order is completed, PayPal and Venmo often hold seller payments up to 21 days, and Amazon's standard reserve is 7 days after delivery. Risk-based holds last longer: PayPal and Payoneer name a limit of 180 days, and Stripe typically pauses payouts for 120 days before a formal review. Some platforms, such as Shopify Payments and Wise, publish no number of days at all. A number of days is a limit or a review point, not a guaranteed payday.

Why there is no single answer
"On hold" sounds like one thing. On each platform it is a different rule, with its own start moment and its own end. Three things decide how long your money waits:
- The platform. Each one writes its own terms.
- The kind of hold. A hold on one payment, a reserve on your whole account, or a limitation while the account is reviewed. Each has a different clock. Not sure which one you have? See PayPal reserve vs hold; the same split applies on most platforms.
- The start moment. The sale, the delivery, the completed order, or the first email the platform sent you.
So the useful question is not "how long do they hold money?" but "which rule applies to me, and from which day does it count?"
How long each platform says it can hold funds
All points below come from the platform's own pages. Each row links to our page with the exact source and the day we read it.
| Platform | What the platform says | Clock starts at | Our page |
|---|---|---|---|
| PayPal | Risk-based holds generally up to 21 days; a challenged payment or balance up to 180 days | When PayPal received the payment | 21-day hold · 180-day hold |
| Stripe | Payouts typically paused 120 days, then a formal review; no number of days given for the review | The first email about the action | Stripe 120 days |
| Etsy | A reserve holds a share of each new physical-item sale; time and percentage shown in your Payment account | Each sale | Etsy reserve |
| Shopify Payments | No number of days published for a hold; a reserve has an expiry date per account | The notice in your admin | Shopify hold |
| Amazon | Standard reserve 7 days after delivery (DD+7); can differ per account | Delivery date | Amazon reserve |
| eBay | Usually released after the buyer receives the item; without tracking a new private seller typically waits 31 days, a new business seller 15 days | Buyer payment / delivery | eBay hold |
| Square | Rolling reserve released on a rolling basis; reviewed after a minimum of six months | Each card payment | Square reserve |
| Wise | No number of days for a restricted account; the app shows an estimated resolution time | The information request | Wise restricted |
| Payoneer | May limit access for up to 180 days, longer under a court order or legal process | The limitation | Payoneer 180 days |
| Venmo | Businesses and sellers can expect held funds, minus fees, within 21 days; risk-based holds can be longer | The payment | Venmo hold |
| Gumroad | Weekly payouts; a sale must be at least 7 days old; email Gumroad if a payout is more than a week late | The sale | Gumroad delayed |
| Upwork | Fixed-price: up to 14 days client review, then a five-day security hold; hourly: 10 days after the weekly billing period | Work submitted / billing period end | Upwork hold |
| Fiverr | Available 14 days after the order is completed (7 days for Seller Plus, TRS and Pro Talent) | Order completed | Fiverr clearance |

Short holds, long holds and "no number"
It helps to sort the platforms into three groups.
Short, routine holds (days to a few weeks). Fiverr's 14-day clearance, Amazon's DD+7 reserve, Upwork's five-day security hold, Gumroad's 7-day rule and the common 21-day hold at PayPal and Venmo. These are normal and usually end on their own once the waiting period passes or delivery is confirmed.
Long, risk-based holds (months). PayPal's 180-day limit, Payoneer's 180 days and Stripe's 120-day pause. These usually follow a review, a limitation or an account closure. Stripe is clear that day 120 starts a formal review, and that the outcome can be a full or partial payout, a longer hold, or a cancelled payout. It is a review date, not a release date.
No fixed term. Shopify Payments and Wise publish no number of days. Here the clock is not a date but a request: the hold usually lasts until you give what the platform asked for and it finishes its check.
New accounts wait longer
Almost every platform is stricter with new sellers. Three examples, read today on the platforms' own pages:
- PayPal says it holds the first payments of a new seller, or a seller who has not sold in a while, for up to 21 days.
- Stripe says the first payout typically completes within 7 to 14 days after the first live payment, depending on industry, country and risk level.
- Etsy says that in a new seller's first 90 days, funds are generally available for deposit 14 to 20 days after a sale.
This is normal and usually shortens as your sales history grows.
How to work out your own date
- Copy the exact word in the notice. Hold, reserve, limitation or payouts paused. The word decides which rule applies.
- Find the start moment. The payment, the delivery, the completed order or the first email.
- Find the platform's own rule in the table above.
- Count the days. Check whether the platform counts calendar days or business days. Our free Unlockpayout Reader counts it for you, or follow How to calculate when held funds are released.
- Write the date down. If that date passes with no change, you have a clear, factual reason to write.
What to do while you wait
- Answer every request first. Tracking, ID, invoices: send them where the platform asked. On platforms with no fixed term, this is often the only thing that moves the case.
- Keep one thread. One calm letter and one follow-up in the same thread work better than a new ticket every day.
- Never share your password or full card and bank details. No platform needs them in a letter. Be careful with anyone who promises to get your money out for a fee; read before you pay anyone.
- Use the free Payout Help Checklist to work in the right order.
A calm message you can send when the date has passed
Hello,
On [date] I received a notice that [the payment / my payouts] are [on hold / in reserve / paused]. Your [help page or agreement] says this lasts [rule, e.g. up to 21 days] from [start moment]. That date was [date]. Since then I have [added tracking / sent the documents you asked for] on [date]. Could you tell me what is still needed, and when I can expect a decision?
Kind regards, [name, account email]

Frequently asked questions
What is the longest a payment platform can hold my money?
It depends on the platform's terms. PayPal and Payoneer name 180 days, and both say a court order or legal process can extend that. Stripe typically pauses payouts for 120 days and then holds a formal review with no fixed end date.
Is the end of the hold the day my money arrives?
Not always. Many platforms describe a limit ("up to 21 days") or a review ("at day 120"), not a payday. After release, your bank may also need a few days.
Why do new sellers wait longer?
Platforms keep money back to cover refunds, disputes and chargebacks while they have little history on you. PayPal, Stripe and Etsy all describe longer waits for new accounts.
What if my platform gives no number of days?
Then you ask two things: what is still needed, and when the review will be finished. Shopify Payments and Wise are examples.
Can I make a hold end sooner?
Sometimes. Adding tracking, confirming delivery and answering requests quickly are the steps platforms themselves name. Only the platform decides when funds are released.
Does Unlockpayout contact the platform for me?
No. We cannot see or change your account and never ask for a password. You send every letter yourself. Not legal advice.
