Payout on Hold: What to Do First
Short answer: when your payout is on hold, stay calm and work in order. Copy the exact words of the notice, answer anything the platform asked for, find the rule on the platform's own page, and note the date that rule points to. Then send one short letter through the channel the platform names, and follow up once in the same thread. The free Payout Help Checklist below walks you through it.

The first hour: what not to do
A held payout feels urgent, and that is exactly when people make it harder for themselves. Three things slow most cases down: a long angry message, a new ticket every day, and guessing at the rule instead of reading it. You do not need any of them. You need a short list and a calm order.
The Payout Help Checklist
Free to use. Tick each step before you move to the next one.
- Copy the exact words of the notice. "Hold", "reserve", "limitation", "payouts paused". Each word means something different, so use the one your platform used.
- Answer any request first. If the platform asked for tracking, an ID or an invoice, send that before anything else, in the place it asked.
- Find the rule on the platform's own page. The help page or user agreement that describes your kind of hold. Not a forum post. Our sources page names the page for each platform.
- Note two dates. The day the clock started (the payment, the completed order or the first email) and the date the rule points to. The free Unlockpayout Reader counts it for you, or follow How to Calculate When Held Funds Are Released.
- Write down what you already did. Tracking added, documents sent, questions answered, each with a date. This list goes straight into your letter.
- Send one calm letter. Quote the rule, give your dates, list what you did and ask one clear question. Copy our free payout hold letter template and send it through the channel the platform names.
- Follow up once, in the same thread. Wait for the response time the platform states. If it states none, about a week is a fair gap.
If the platform names no fixed term at all (Shopify Payments and Wise, for example, do not publish a number of days), step 4 changes: you ask what is still needed and when the review will be finished.
Hold, reserve or limitation?
A hold usually covers one payment for a set period. A reserve keeps back part of your sales on its own schedule. A limitation pauses the account while it is reviewed. The word in your notice decides which rule you look up, so step 1 really matters.
Keep your account safe while you wait
- Never share your password, full card number or full bank details. No platform needs them in a letter.
- Be careful with anyone who promises to get your money out for a fee. Read before you pay anyone.
- Keep every message in one thread so the history stays in one place.

Frequently asked questions
Will following this checklist get my money paid out?
Only the platform decides that. The checklist makes your case clear and easy to answer, so you know what is still needed. Not legal advice.
What should I do first when my payout is on hold?
Read the notice slowly and copy its exact words. Then find the rule on the platform's own help page that matches those words. Everything else builds on that.
Should I open a new ticket every day?
No. One clear letter and one follow-up in the same thread work better than many new messages.
Is a hold the same as a reserve?
Not quite. A hold usually covers one payment for a set period. A reserve keeps back part of your sales on its own schedule. A limitation pauses the account while it is reviewed. Use the word your notice uses.
What if the platform gives no number of days?
Some platforms, such as Shopify Payments and Wise, publish no fixed term. Then you ask what is still needed and when the review will be finished.
Does Unlockpayout contact the platform for me?
No. Unlockpayout cannot see or change your account and never asks for a password. With Premium we write your letters and follow-ups and check your documents; you send them yourself.
